Perfect Patterns

While Kindergarten A was learning about patterns, everyone had the opportunity to visit four different stations to practice their skills.  On the carpet, the children did pattern puzzle and made patterns using peg boards.  At the blue table the kids had a blast making different kinds of play doh puzzles.  When at the red table, the kids got to use the I-pads to make patterns in many ways and at the green table their job was to create patterns using colored foam shapes.  The kids had a great time and it was wonderful to see so many different types of patterns being created!

Super Sorters

The kids of Kindergarten A are wonderful at sorting and describing how they sorted! Everyone took part in sorting centers and had the chance to "show what they know" in a variety of ways. We used I-Pads, puzzles, games, manipulatives and crafts. It was a very busy time but everyone had fun and learned lots too!

It tasted wonderful! There were also raspberries, cheese and crackers for us to enjoy. What a fabulous way to start our day!!

Treasure Hunt

We had a wonderful time on Thursday, hunting for treasure! It was our first experience with Geocaching. The caches or treasures, as we called them, were hidden around the school yard and we had to find all of them. There were special grade 5 helpers to show us how to use the GPS units and lead us in the right direction if we weren't sure. In the end we found them all. It was a beautiful day and sooooo much fun!!

Pies, Pies, Pies

Our challenge, as a school, was to raise as much money as we could for the Terry Fox Walk. Mr. Kopecky announced to the school that if we raised $500, someone could throw a pie in his face. Then he added that if we raised $1000, someone could throw a pie in Mrs. Stankewich's face! Well, guess what? We did it!! At our October assembly two students were chosen to throw the pies. Everyone loved it and showed such great school spirit! Enjoy the pictures!

Going Buggy!

Spring has finally arrived and we are learning about insects!  For Show and Share, Carys brought her bug catcher to teach us about June Bugs and grubs.  We emptied the dirt out onto some paper and the kids searched through the dirt to find the grubs and the big June Bug.  There was a lot of great discussion and observations!  Later, down in Legion Park, we also discovered lots of ants and ladybugs.  You never know what we might find next.....

Crazy for Colours

In March we explored a lot with colour.  The best part was experimenting with mixing primary colours!  We invited some parent volunteers in to help us and the kids had the chance to colour mix at four stations.  They mixed fingerpaint, dyes on diffusing paper, paint in bags and watercolour paints on watercolour paper.  The kids loved  all of the activities and learned lots in a very memorable way!  Enjoy the pictures.... :)

Gingerbread Fun!

In February, we filled our compliment chart again!  We also read lots of different stories about gingerbread cookies such as The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Baby, The Gingerbread Cowboy, The Gingerbread Girl and The Gingerbread Kid Goes To School.  To celebrate our great behavior and our learning about gingerbread, we decided to bake and decorate cookies.  There were girls, boys and babies.... and they all tasted delicious!!

Snow Dough

The kids had a fantastic time creating snow dough creations. First, we had to mix the dough and build our creations. Everyone used their imaginations to create everything from snails and snakes to giraffes and cats. After baking them, the kids were able to paint their artwork. They were so proud of the finished products! Thanks to our parent helpers Jennifer Campbell, Holly Kolodichuk and Janene Webster!

Morning Activities

In January, the kids began doing Morning Activities each morning.  These activities are a variety of literacy centers in which the kids can practice letters, sounds, reading, writing, listening, speaking and other important literacy skills.  While the students are working at their centers, some are called to do guided reading with me.  During this time we read pattern books, learn sight words and practice early reading strategies together.  The kids really enjoy Morning Activities and are having such a great time - they don't even realize how much they are learning!!

Take Apart Center

In January we opened up the Take Apart Center and it has been a big hit!  Maccoy brought us a vcr and dvd player to take apart first and it didn't take long to get it into pieces.  This helps the kids with both gross and fine motor skills and really makes them think about what tools will be helpful.  We are still working on remembering to wear our safety goggles!  The next item at the take apart center is an old answering machine.....

Monkeying Around

One of our favorite activities was acting out monkey stories that we had read in class.  The kids each created their own monkey hat or headband and then had the opportunity to become a monkey for a few minutes!  Some children acted out "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed", some did "Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree" and some did "Caps For Sale".  No matter which story they did, the kids loved it and were very animated in their acting!  I'm sure you will enjoy these pictures!

Reindeer Cookies

In December when we were learning about the letter R, we did many activities involving reindeer.  One of the favorites with the kids was making reindeer cookies.  Holly, Drayson's mom, baked gingerbread cookies for everyone to decorate.  When turned upside down, these cookies make the perfect reindeer!  Everyone in the class had a turn to go and decorate 2 reindeer cookies in any way they wanted.  One for themselves and one to share with our friends in Kindergarten B.  After practicing for our Christmas Concert we invited our Kindergarten buddies over to our room to share the reindeer treats!!
